58 - Wood and Polycarbonate

Ora aqui está o resultado dos trabalhos no final da passada semana. Os portões começam a ver a madeira que os reveste e a casa, o famoso policarbonato! Mais informações sobre estes revestimentos se seguirão em futuros posts.

Here are the results of the work of last Thursday and Friday. The portals start to get acquainted with the wood that will cover them and the house with the controversial polycarbonate! More information on these coverings will follow on future posts.

57 - Before the polycarbonate

Antes do policarbonato foram aparafusados e soldados 4 fiadas horizontais de tubos galvanizados de 25x25mm. Estes tubos metálicos são o suporte físico onde se sustentam as placas de policarbonato. Com estas fotos dizemos adeus à cortiça desnudada do véu translúcido que a envolverá.

Before using the polycarbonate sheets, four horizontal rows of galvanized tubes of 25x25mm section were fixed by screws and soldering. These metalic tubes are the physical support where the polycarbonate sheets will be attached. With these photos we say goodbye to the naked cork, for the last time without the translucid veil that will cover it.

Personal Note 15 - Electricity

Antes do início do enchimento das paredes com terra foi necessário passar quilómetros de tubos de calibres variados pela paredes e tecto. São os tubos por onde passarão os fios eléctricos para a cozinha, para os candeeiros, para todo o tipo de pontos de luz ou electricidade. E para uma casa pequena é assustador ver quantos pontos de luz estão envolvidos!

O Vítor Duarte, electricista da obra, veio com a sua equipa na primeira semana de Agosto e meteu mãos à obra. Instalou-se o fio para as descargas na terra, e mais dezenas de ligações independentes aos quadros eléctricos. Tinha que ficar tudo previsto e feito! Uma vez as paredes cheias de terra e com o ripado será difícil acrescentar mais algum fio.

E aproveita-se as fotografias para matar saudades da bonita estrutura de madeira, agora permanentemente envolvida pela terra.

Before we could start to fill the walls with earth it was necessary to install miles of tubes of different calibers through the wall space and ceiling. These tubes will have the electric wiring inside to light the house and for all the different electricity or light points. For a small house it's scary to see how many light points we are talking about!

The electrician Vítor Duarte and his team came on the first week of August and worked a full day on this. The earth copper wire was installed outside the house and inside dozens of connections to the electric board were prepared. It all needed to be predicted and prepared! Once the walls were filled with daub and wattled it would be and will be difficult to add anything.

The pictures also give us a chance to remember the beautifull wood structure now permanently enveloped by the earth daub.

Nota Pessoal 14 - A Testemunha

Personal Note 14 - The Witness

Nos idos anos 80, eu vi um filme chamado "A Testemunha" onde se retratavam alguns dos hábitos de uma comunidade Amish da costa Leste dos EUA. No filme vêem-se vários vizinhos de uma comunidade agrícola reunirem-se num dia de Verão para ajudarem a construir um edifício de madeira. Fiquei na altura fascinado com a vida comunitária daquelas pessoas, os vínculos de entre-ajuda e também os problemas inerentes ao tipo de vida que levavam. Nem tudo é fácil quando se vive em conjunto, partilhando as coisas boas assim como os conflitos e dificuldades. Mas o resultado pode, a meu ver, ser válido e bem maior do que a soma das partes.

Na construção desta casa tivemos o imenso privilégio de usufruir dessas coisas boas da vida comunitária. Fomos ajudados por imensa gente, uma comunidade solta de pessoas que por laços familiares, de amizade ou de ideias, e de forma desinteressada, decidiram colaborar no enchimento em terra das paredes. E a oferta do seu tempo e boa vontade foi, sem dúvida, dos maiores privilégios que usufruí na minha vida.

Foram quatro fins-de-semana e um feriado intensos, sempre acompanhado, carregado 'ao colo'. A minha mãe, com a ajuda de outras pessoas, trazia-nos sempre o almoço. Estivemos nós. Veio o meu pai, o meu irmão, cunhados, primos e amigos. Vieram os arquitectos, os seus amigos, familiares e colegas. Vieram estranhos e curiosos. Todos vieram e ajudaram.

No fim-de-semana de 25 e 26 de Agosto vieram o José, a Raquel, a Joana, eu, o Eduardo, o Francisco, o Luís, o João e o João V, a Vera, o Zé Carlos, a Dina, o Carlos filho, a Damiana, a Carmen, a Patrícia, a Cristina, o Filipe, a Sandra e o pequeno Álvaro, a Fernanda e o Vítor. No Sábado 1 de Setembro e Domingo 2 veio a Lina, e os jovens João e Pedro, a Damiana, o Carlos pai, a Elizabete, a Fernanda, o Nuno, o Paulo, a Raquel, a Joana B, a Joana C e a Joana D, a Rosa, a Natália, a Julieta, o José, o Eduardo, o Francisco, o Manel e eu.

A testemunha de tudo isto é a casa. Ela guarda em cada monte de terra o esforço e dedicação de alguém. E mesmo quando eu me esquecer se foi a Joana B, C ou D que encheu certo espaço as marcas delas ainda lá estarão. A casa guarda essa verdade e será monumento ao que testemunhou. Que dure muito tempo.

In the mid 1980s I watched a movie called "The Witness" where some of the customs of a Amish community of the East coast of the USA were shown. In the movie we can see how different neighbours of a farming community come together one Summer's day to help build a wood barn. At the time I was fascinated with the community life of these farmers, how they worked together and helped each other and also the problems inherent to the type of life they led. It isn't all easy when one lives in such a way, sharing the good things but also the conflicts and difficulties associated. But the result can, I believe, be a valid one and greater than its parts.

In the building of this house we have had the huge privilege of benefiting from some of the good things associated with community living. We were helped by many people, an open community of individuals connected by family, friendship or ideas that in a selfless way decided to colaborate in the filling of the walls with earth. And their gift of time and good will was, with no doubt, one of the biggest privileges I have enjoyed in my life.

For four intense weekends and a holiday I was always supported, carried on the arms of others. My mother, with the help of other people, brought us lunch everyday. We were there. My father, brother, sisters-in-law, cousins and friends came. The architects, their friends, family and colleagues came. Strangers came. And they all helped.

The house is the witness to all this. It keeps in every mound of earth the effort and dedication of someone. And even when I no longer remember who did which mound the testimony of that person will still be there. The house will be the guardian of this truth. May it last a long time.

55 - Até ao varrer da Terra!

55 - All the way to the sweeping of the floor!

E não é que conseguimos mesmo? Neste 4º fim-de-semana, num esforço acrescido por parte dos voluntários presentes, acabámos de encher todas as paredes com terra! Nove dias de trabalho apelidam agora a tarefa de herculiana!

And didn't we actually do it? This 4th weekend, with an extra effort by the attending volunteers, we finished filling all the walls with daub! Nine days of work make this an herculean task!

Ao pôr-do-sol saiu a última carrada de lama que havia de rematar o último topo da última parede. Depois das máquinas lavadas, da casa varrida e já ao som do amigo mocho galego, nós, os resistentes, abrimos uma garrafa de Murganheira, da região de Lamego, e brindámos à saúde de todos os que por ali andaram a trabalhar: À VOSSA!

By sunset, the last mud load that would finish the last top of the last wall was mixed. After cleaning the two daub mixers, sweeping the house and already in the company of our local little owl, we, the final resistants, opened a bottle of Murganheira bubbly, from the Lamego region, and toasted to the health of all participants in the project: CHEERS!

Está quase! Os sexto e sétimo dias da oficina de tabique correram intensamente e com resultados visíveis. Duplicámos os meios mecânicos de produção de massa (duas betoneiras) e conseguimos preencher todos os espaços de fasqueado disponíveis.

Pelas nossas contas precisamos de 2 dias para terminar o enchimento total das paredes com terra. Serão os últimos dois dias à roda da terra! O próximo fim-de-semana, Sábado 1 e Domingo 2, a inaugurar o mês de Setembro, é a última oportunidade para participar na oficina de tabique!

Será que conseguiremos terminar a tempo de abrir o champanhe ao pôr-do-sol?

We are nearly there! The sixth and seventh day of wattle and daub workshops were intense and the results show it. We doubled the mechanical daub production (two cement mixers) and we were able to fill in all the pre-prepared and available wattled space (wooden stakes).

By our predictions we need two more days to finish filling in the walls with daub. It will be the last two days around the earth! The next weekend, Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd, opening the month of September, is the last chance to participate in the wattle and daub workshops.

Will we be able to finish on time to open the champagne at sunset?

Agora que o preenchimento dos triângulos estruturou o (algo frágil) revestimento de cortiça, vamos começar a encher, com a segunda camada de terra, a totalidade da espessura das paredes! Estamos a aplicar o fasqueado de madeira que suportará, pelo interior, este enchimento com terra.

Now that the triangles have added support to the somewhat fragile cork outter lining, we will begin to fill in, with a second layer of daub, the total depth of the walls! We are nailing the wood stakes (wattle) that will support, from the inside, this daub filling.

Personal Note 13 - Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th Come get your hands dirty!

As paredes de terra da casa seguem a bom ritmo. No passado fim-de-semana fez-se uma alteração à constituição da massa para enchimento das paredes introduzindo-se palha de forma a reduzir ainda mais a contracção da terra ao secar. E muitos triângulos foram cheios!

Tivemos muita e bem-vinda ajuda na passada quarta-feira e fim-de-semana! Veio a Joana, a Raquel e o Gonçalo, a Anabela e a Ana, outro Gonçalo e a Maria, a Guiomar, o José, o Miguel, a Damiana e o Carlos pai, o Carlos filho e a Dina, o Manel e o Pedro, o Francisco e o Eduardo, o Luís e a Martina, a João e outro Pedro, a Deusa e o António, o Mário e o Fernando, o outro Francisco, a Fátima, a Maria de Lurdes e mais um Pedro, a Nilde, o Mário e a pequena Sofia, a Anabela, o Nuno e a jovem Maria, a Fernanda e o Vitor, a outra Joana, a Teresa e a Marta, mais uma Ana, a Mónica, o Simão, outra Marta, o jovem Lucas, a Cristina, o Tininho, os jovens irmãos Inês e Nuno, o pequeno Álvaro, a Sandra e o Filipe, a Humberta e o Gata, o Luís Pedro, a Paula e os jovens irmãos Manuel e Madalena! Uns vieram só ver e dar apoio, outros vieram uma manhã ou uma tarde, alguns repetiram dias. Foram todos bem vindos! O mais novo tinha 15 meses e também fez o seu cantinho de triângulo. Aliás, neste fim-de-semana vieram muitas crianças que trouxeram os pais e pela correria e brincadeira acho que todos se divertiram.

No próximo fim-de-semana, vamos terminar os triângulos – já só falta uma dúzia! – e iniciar a segunda fase de enchimento até ao ripado de madeira. Precisamos de mãos e seus donos para peneirar a terra, tirar água do poço, cortar palha, mudar os cds quando todos os outros têm as mãos na terra, transportar o carrinho de mão, mas, acima de tudo, aplicar a terra nas paredes ou, simplesmente, fazer-nos companhia nas pausas para chá, café, sumos ou bolos!

Tenho partilhado experiências, conhecido muita gente, usufruído de muita boa vontade e dedicação. Amigos que não se viam há anos têm-se encontrado por acaso na obra, vive-se um ambiente de convivência, aprendizagem e entre-ajuda. Tem sido um prazer ver as minhas expectativas para estes dias superadas e é com um sincero obrigado que relembro todos os que pela obra têm passado.

E fica mais um convite: Sábado ou Domingo, venham continuar connosco esta aventura de fazer uma casa com paredes de terra e palha! (mas não digam ao lobo mau...)

The wattle and daub walls are making good progress. The past weekend we made a change to the earth and added straw to reduce further shrinkrage of the daub when drying. And many triangles were completed!

We had much and welcomed help both the past wednesday and the weekend! 59 people came at one time or another (see names above!)! Some came to watch and lend their support, others came one morning or afternoon, many repeated days. They were all welcome! The youngest was 15 months and also helped with a corner of a triangle. In fact, this weekend many children came and brought their parents and by the running and playing I suspect they all had a good time.

Next weekend we will finish the triangles - only a dozen left to go! - and start the second stage of the filling in of the walls to the inner wattle. We need hands and their owners to sift the earth, get water from the well, cut straw, change the cds when everyone else has their hands in the mud, push the wheel car, but, above all, apply the daub on the walls or, simply, keep us company on the brakes for tea, coffe, juices or cakes!

I have shared experiences, met many people, been on the receiving end of much dedication and good will. Friends that hadn't seen eachother in years have met on the workshops, there is a general environment of learning, socializing and mutual help. It has been a pleasure to have my expectations for these days surpassed and it is with a sincere thank you that I remember all those that have been going to the workshops.

And here is another invitation: Saturday or Sunday, come continue with us this adventure of building a house with walls of earth and straw!

51 - O NARIZ DE MIGUEL

51 - The nose of Miguel

Não é Ângelo mas esculpe! É Mendes, arquitecto Miguel Mendes, e deixou-nos um nariz que para sempre ficará no interior do Tabique!

It's not Angelo but he sculpts nevertheless! It's Mendes, architect Miguel Mendes, and he left us a nose that will forever be inside the wattle and daub wall!

50 - Segundo Round, Terceiro é já este sábado e domingo

50 - Segunda Volta, Third is next Saturday and Sunday

Depois do primeiro fim-de-semana, o segundo round teve lugar esta quarta-feira, feriado mas dia de trabalho. Na parte da manhã a chuva e o vento fustigaram-nos ferozmente mas à tarde o sol secou as vistas.
Novas mãos vieram moldar a terra e apareceram também reeincidentes que nitidamente começam a ficar viciados nesta terapia que é construir uma casa metendo as mãos na lama.

After the first weekend, the second round took place this Wednesday, a holiday but also a day of labour. In the morning the rain and wind bashed us ferociously but in the afternoon the sun dried the sights.
New hands came to mold the earth and others returned, starting to show the signs of addiction to this theraphy of building a house by getting your hands in the mud.
